"That fellow with the red hair," said the police captain as he pointed. "I'll watch him," the sergeant answered. The captain had raided two opium dens the day before, and the pride of accomplishment puffed his chest. He would have given advice to the sheriff of Oahu that evening.

I always thought he was a Western writer and most of this book takes place aboard a small ship. Harrigan meets up with McTee in Hawaii when he sees him in a fight with a group of sailors and jumps in to help. When they see the police arrive the two manage to escape and part ways with only a word or two. Walking around the docks, Harrigan impulsively jumps aboard a small steamer just as it leaves port. Much to his surprise, McTee is Captain and proceeds to attempt to "break" Harrigan. So begins the adventure which includes a shipwreck, mutiny, and of course a girl that they both fall for. I was engrossed throughout the whole book and read it without pause for food, drink, or sleep (much less work). Some readers may not like it but the book ends with a twist and I loved it.

An enjoyable, old-fashioned yet engaging adventure story that explores the respect, admiration, and hate shared by two men who are seemingly stronger, more bullheaded, and more in quest of an adventure than any other two men on the planet, yet are each other's equal. When a woman secures the affection of both, the tension is amplified, but don't look for any steamy sex scenes in this book. It is not a love story, and even if it were, the men in this story have a certain kind of honor that would require them to beat any man silly who looked on while they loved a woman. Harrigan, though a fictitious character, would have formed a fist from the ether of Brand's imagination and broken Brand's nose for even thinking about it. If you need that kind of page-turning gewgaw, look elsewhere.I had never heard of this author. Let's just say he was 'Brand new' to me (pun intended). I will be reading more of his books in the future.

He was orphaned at an early age and worked as a cowhand during his formative years and attended the University of California, where he was known as a troublemaker. work influenced Louis L'Amour and hundreds of other western authors who followed the literary trail Brand had blazed. This is one of his best novels, revenge!, yet powerful with an ending that only Max could write. In some ways, it's sad these days are now gone - except for being able to pick up his novels once again. If you have never read one of his westerns, you could do no better than to pick up this one.
