Meet Romar Jones, 15½, basketball player with months to go before the next season and no one who cares about him since Granny died. His dad’s been dead for two years. When his 9th grade language arts teacher says pay attention to the poetry unit or take a hike, Romar opts for the hike, leaves Roseburg, Oregon, and embarks on a journey to find his mother. He knows she’s in prison in Washington. He shrugs on his dad’s trail-guide backpack and sets out, heading first to the coast to leave some of Granny’s ashes. Within minutes of his first footsteps on an ocean beach, he encounters a derelict man he dubs Meth Mouth. Five days after leaving school he stops at Vesta’s by the Sea near Yachats. Could have been good luck. Could have been Granny steered him there and had a hand in all that happened after.

Romar Jones Takes a Hike: Runaway or Missing Person, by Jan Walker

Review "This novel is that quintessential rarity in YA fiction: a realistic coming of age story that is not depressing. Romar is sweet, earnest and eminently genuine, and young readers will find his quest an accessible and worthy read." ForeWord Reviews Magazine"I found Romar Jones Takes a Hike to be both engaging and thoughtful. His journey, although physical, is also a journey of the heart. Well -written ... should prove to be a satisfying read for the YA audience." Judy Park, Children's Book Buyer, Mostly Books, Gig Harbor, WA"I enjoyed the book and was eager to read on. I will buy copies for my four high schools ... I think kids will relate to the characters and to Romar's conflict." Doug Hoffman, Media Specialist, Lincoln County, Oregon, Schools"The story touches upon a niche in society that is not often considered or given a voice. The characters are engaging and believable. Walker accuraely depicts interactions ... and portrays struggles in a manner that allows the reader to understand and empathize with their plight." Joanne Torres, Medical Professional. "Romar is an engaging character who, in the search for his mother, discovers himself. His dilemmas and responses will resonate with teen readers, and adults will remember their own journeys to maturity." Gretchen Russell, Teacher and Librarian

From the Author Romar Jones Takes a Hike is a story that long percolated in my thoughts. In this story, Romar sets out from Roseburg, Oregon, to find his mother who is in prison in Washington State. He's never met her and knows she's in prison only because relatives let the information slip. He has never communicated with his mother. When I taught offenders in Washington Corrections Center for Women, an underage boy arrived at the prison hoping to see his mother. He'd hitch hiked from Florida. Of course, he was not allowed inside the facility. I taught parenting and family courses to both adult female and male offenders inside prisons for 18 years. While working with the women, I wrote the text, Parenting From A Distance: Your rights and responsibilities. It is a text for incarcerated parents and is now in its Third Edition.I am also the author of An Inmate's Daughter, a story about a girl who is supposed to keep her dad's incarceration a secret. The story is set in Tacoma, WA, and at the McNeil Island Corrections Center. At the time, McNeil was the last island corrections facility in the U.S. It is now closed. The book includes scenes on the boat that transported visitors and staff to the island, and inside a visiting room.I am also the author of a prison teacher's memoir, Dancing to the Concertina's Tune. The title is based on the circled wire used on prison fences - Razor Wire Concertina, designed to shred flesh. That book will be reissued Summer 2012 with the added subtitle, Teaching Behind Bars. Much of it is set on McNeil Island, thus providing a history of that facility, built in the early 20th century as a federal penitentiary. Both An Inmate's Daughter and Dancing to the Concertina's Tune were named Washington Reads books by the state librarian.Romar Jones, like 2 million U.S. children, suffers the consequences of a parent in prison. He was reared by a grandmother who loved him, and he had his dad in his life until he was 13. Now, at 15 1/2, he's living in relative foster care. Granny has just died, and his dad was killed two years earlier in an accident. His relatives don't really want the responsibility of rearing another child. His uncle has told Romar he's old enough to be making his own way in the world. That's exactly what Romar strikes out to do.To my surprise, Romar Jones Takes a Hike is getting high praise from readers of all ages and both sexes. He's still in my head and will appear in a new book, Carvings by Carlos, due out in 2013.

From the Back Cover Romar Jones, 15 ½ -- runaway or missing person? It makes a world of difference.   When his 9th grade language arts teacher tells him to pay attention to the poetry assignment or take a hike, Romar opts for the hike, walks out of Roseburg Oregon High School and embarks on a journey to find his mother. He figures that shouldn't be too hard. She's in prison in Washington.    Romar lived with his dad and Granny for thirteen years. When his dad died in an accident, Romar and his granny moved in with relatives who didn't really want them. Granny and basketball kept Romar going for the next two years, but now Granny is dead, the basketball season is over and his uncle plans to pawn him off on other relatives.    Before she died, Romar promised Granny he'd get some of her ashes to Smelt Sands Beach on the Oregon Coast. Heading there first, before hiking north to Washington, feels like his best shot.    Romar Jones Takes a Hike is the sometimes sad, sometimes funny and totally satisfying story of a teenage boy finding his way to independence in a place he calls Home.    Settings include Yachats and the Cummins Creek Wilderness on the Oregon Coast and the Washington Corrections Center for Women near Gig Harbor, Washington.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Well written, this novel is both gripping and important By Janet Hill Romar Jones , a well-drawn and lovable character, captured my heart immediately. When no one who cares about him is left in his life, Romar literally follows his high-school English teacher's advice and takes a hike. He leaves the town of Roseburg, Oregon with two purposes in mind: to carry his granny's ashes to the beach she loved on the Oregon coast , "not all her ashes, just the handful he'd swiped from the urn before Uncle Sherman delivered it to the cemetery." and to find his mother, a prison inmate somewhere in the Northwest..Jan Walker's writing invites the reader into a story of intrigue, heartache, joy, and humor, a story that is genuinely satisfying. The story and the characters will stick in the readers mind long after the last chapter is finished.Janet Muirhead Hill, author of Kendall's Storm and other storiesKendall's Storm.
