Three stories, the aforementioned ‘The Sea Garden’, ‘The Lavender Field’, and ‘A Shadow Life’ are linked together in a well executed tale.As I finished the first story, I was left hanging…what happened? Ellie, our main character in this present day installment, was a garden designer. She found herself immersed into a sometime disturbing, frightening, and strangely drawing setting.The second novella had me in France during World War II. A young blind girl, Marte, finds a family willing to embrace her and let her be part of their fragrance industry in Provence. But there is more to unfold in this family and for Marte to be a part of its mission.The third focuses on Iris, a British intelligence recruit. Where her assignment and interactions take her is intricate and highly secretive. Her involvement with key characters is fraught with ongoing mystery in a ‘fog of war’.The conclusion deftly links the three novellas.A new discovery for me as the reader was the operation of the SOE, its membership, women in service, espionage and the paths that were taken.I personally applaud Deborah Lawrenson for a special read that took me to a time and place and role thankfully foreign to me.

I had few expectations of this 3 short stories that make up a novel by Deborah Lawrenson. Yet, I really liked it.A very quick read, "The Sea Garden" is three books that make up a novel. The first "book" has the same title as the novel and it opens on a ferry to the island of Porquerolles where Ellie Brooke, a landscape designer, is on her way to a job for the de Fayola family. Witness to a man who falls overboard, it is a foreshadowing of the odd occurrences to come as she deals with Madame de Fayola who seems to dislike her to an unhealthy degree and mysterious man named Gabriel who tells her that he is a 'war historian.'The next story called "The Lavendar Field" goes backwards into the past of World War II where Marthe who is working at perfume factory finds herself in the midst of a French Resistance group. A dangerous thing in Nazi-occupied France.The final story called "A Shadow Life" will help loop the first stories as it tells the story of Iris, a British intelligence officer in World War 2, and the French agent she becomes involved with as well as the women who worked in intelligence (and how they were abandoned post-war).I really enjoyed the format of having the three short stories with seemingly self-contained storylines yet they ended up making a whole. What happens in the first story is explained in the last story yet one also needs the second story to highlight the suspected loyalties that come up in the last story as well as the antagonism in the first story.Really glad I selected this book. Very enjoyable read.

The writing is beautiful; it is somehow calm, and peaceful, even while describing extremely difficult topics.This book weaves in constant references to physical beauty, particularly the spectacular beauty of gardens, flowers, and seascapes. It also describes the aromas of plants and flowers in detail, as they are used to make many products such as soaps and perfumes. The landscapes and aromas overlay the stories to create an overall sensuous effect.The book consists of three distinctly different stories, the first taking place in 2013, the second in 1943, and the third spanning 1943 through 1950 and eventually up to 2013.In a magical way, Deborah Lawrenson ties these tales together in a way that I didn't see coming.The first book, The Sea Garden, is the story of Ellie Brooke, a British landscape designer who travels to the island of Porquerolles, in France, to meet with a potential customer by whom she has been selected to restore the overgrown gardens at his estate.While there, some eerie haunting things happen to her, and she decides to reject the possible work and return to England.The second book, The Lavender Field, is the tale of Marthe, a blind woman who works at a perfume factory during World War 2 , and who finds herself working for people who are part of a resistance cell. Marthe is living in occupied France, and, unable to see, she relies on her other senses to try to understand the world around her.The third story is that of Iris Nightingale, who works for British Intelligence in London during the war. She is involved in training and moving operatives to France for intelligence gathering. She falls in love with a French pilot, who disappears towards the end of the war. She spends many years following up on what may have become of him.The book ends by tying everything together, in ways that I had not predicted.I don't want to spoil the stories, and give too much information, but I will highly recommend this book which is so wonderfully written and the mystery of the three tales make sure that you do not want to put this book down.This is one of the best, most moving books that I have read in a long time.
