Mary Ann Evans (1819-1880), better known by her pen name George Eliot, was an English novelist. She was one of the leading writers of the Victorian era. Her novels, largely set in provincial England, are well known for their realism and psychological perspicacity. Her first major literary work was the translation of David Strauss' Life of Jesus (1846). In 1857 The Sad Fortunes of the Reverend Amos Barton, the first of the Scenes of Clerical Life, was published in Blackwood's Magazine and, along with the other Scenes, was well received. Her first complete novel, published in 1859, was Adam Bede and was an instant success. Eliot's most famous work, Middlemarch, was a turning point in the history of the novel.

About the Author George Eliot was the pseudonym for Mary Anne Evans, one of the leading writers of the Victorian era, who published seven major novels and several translations during her career. She started her career as a sub-editor for the left-wing journal The Westminster Review, contributing politically charged essays and reviews before turning her attention to novels. Among Eliot s best-known works are Adam Bede, The Mill on the Floss, Silas Marner, Middlemarch and Daniel Deronda, in which she explores aspects of human psychology, focusing on the rural outsider and the politics of small-town life. Eliot died in 1880.

Many modern readers find her work too florid and "wordy". I find her work elegant beyond my ability to express myself.Janet's Repentance is a short story. But it is nonetheless, slightly lengthy and written in a very ornate and descriptive manner. Originally it was published as the third of three short stories that comprise "Scenes of Clerical Life". It is the longest of the three short stories.Janet's Repentance is a story about a married woman's experience with domestic violence and also her evolving relationship with a clerical person who is trying to help her. There is also narrative about related issues such as alcolholism as these issues relate to domestic violence. It is not in any way scandalous or tawdry by today's standards. In the event a reader is not aware, George Eliot is a female, birth name, Mary Ann Evans. Miss Evans did receive a typical education available to some Victorian females. It is, nonetheless, limited. Miss Evans then proceeded in a course of advanced self education that I feel can only be described as spectacular. She became one of the leading intellectuals, male or female, in England from that period. She would appear at conferences and be the only female present. She became an author who rivaled in popularity all the great Victorian authors, the likes of Charles Dickens. As time went on she became somewhat forgotten. What separates George Eliot from all other authors, in my estimation, is her unbelievably deep insights, her empathy for her characters, and her equally incredibly beautiful style. George Eliot paints portraits with words. Janet's Repentance is a perfect example of that ability. Additionally this story, about domestic violence, is composed at a time when the subject would be considered somewhat taboo.I am quite sure George Eliot was potentially exposing herself to much criticism in publishing this work. George Eliot was born in 1819. There is an American female author, Kate Chopin, born in 1850. Kate Chopin composed a delicately written short story entitled "The Storm", which is about a female having an affair. That story was not published during Kate Chopin's lifetime...I most highly recommend Janet's Repentance(As well as "The Storm"). As I stated, although it is a short story, it is slightly lengthy and ornately written. If one wishes to read it, take your time. As I always say about reading George Eliot's work, "sip, don't gulp"... Thank You
