0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A classic of Italian literature By Next Bestseller My husband and I stayed in a hotel in Milan some years ago. Its name was I Promessi Sposi. Being American and ignorant of European literature, we asked the proprietor what the name meant. Of course, from our Italian-American dictionary, we had the idea that it was about promises and marriage, but why would a hotel have this name? He explained that it was classic literature and that most Italians were very familiar with it. So, out of curiosity, I downloaded the Kindle edition and read it. Don't ignore the footnotes, and be sure to consult other sources to fill in the blanks when you don't understand the underlying history. Expand your horizons!
