She wears sock monkey pajamas, dances country dances to classical music while baking cookies and drives bad enough to give her passengers white knuckles. She has just landed the catering event of her career and its success will either make or break her catering company, The Butler Did It. Her best friend since first grade, Hyacinth, helps her out part-time when she isn’t working her job at the local university’s library. Hyacinth is the sister she never had and their friendship is very dear to El. Therefore, when it is discovered that Hyacinth is missing, El just knows she has been kidnapped. El is also dealing with a catastrophe of giant proportions concerning her once in a lifetime catering job. This job is for the retirement of Professor Maxwell Haverhill, a 60-year-old, renowned, treasure hunter of old artifacts in addition to teaching social studies at the local university. Max and El quickly become entangled in the investigation of her catering problems as well as involved in their own search for Hyacinth. Along the way, they fall in love with one another much to their mutual surprise. At first, I wasn’t sure I was going to like this novel, but I stuck with it and am so glad I did! I adored the romance between El and Max. It couldn’t have been written better in my opinion. El’s strong devotion to her daughter and granddaughter was great to read about as well as her never-give-up attitude. Hyacinth was a hoot! I just loved the part where she was singing to annoy her kidnappers! All three main characters had a deep devotion to God and depended on Him no matter what, even when it was really difficult to see Him at work. I sure hope there are more mysteries to come in this new humorous and romantic mystery series. Great job Diane!

By Faye El Littefield is a caterer who solve mysteries on the side, and she is especially invested in this case as she is a prime suspect. Her catering company "The Butler Did It" was serving a retirement dinner for Dr. Haverhill when half the guests starting throwing up and had to be sent to the hospital. On that same night the figurehead that Dr. Haverhill found is stolen, and El's best friend, Hyacinth, goes missing. The story unfolds from the perspectives of the main characters. Besides Mrs. Littlefield's side of the story, which is told in first person, the other three perspectives are related in third person. So once I got used to the format, I found that is flowed wonderfully and kept the action going throughout the book.I liked that the main characters in this book weren't the typical 20-somethings, this is a story about mature, middle-aged adults.Overall this is a fun, entertaining read with lots of clues to uncover the real villain. There is great interaction between Max and El. Max is a strong man of good character and faith, who never married, and is surprised that at his age he has found someone he is interested in. A real page turner with a multi-layered mystery that keeps you guessing and take time to unravel.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received one or more of the products or services mentioned above for free in the hope that I would mention it on my blog. By Amazon Customer Such an interesting cozy mystery with a mix of foodie info, mystery, bad guys, family situations, history, and romance. I enjoyed the freshness and the pacing of The Curious Case of the Missing Figurehead: A Novel (A Professor and Mrs. Littlefield Mystery). There was no way for me to predict what was going to happen, but I was not thrown out of whack by sudden plot twists. The characters are well written and reacted as I expected them to.The point of view switches between Mrs. Littlefield, her friend Hyacinth, and the professor. It is well done by chapters and was not confusing. Mrs. Littlefield is funny as she line dances to Mozart, smart as she figures out the clues, and bold as she stands up for herself, her family, and friends. Hyacinth is a co-heroine and quite a colorful, brave person. The professor is almost an Indiana Jones character who teaches, yet deep sea dives, and hunts down historical treasures. They are all such interesting characters! They are written so real that it seems like things that really happened. The supporting characters are also well rounded and so fun! I especially enjoyed the Possum Grove group; it just made me smile. There are several levels of villians; it kind of reminded me of a movie with the dumb crooks and then the really mean one that's in charge. The additions of the heroine's daughter and granddaughter make it seem like this could be the family just down the street from me. So many others are involved since there is a university, a catering business, the police force, a church family, etc. Once again it sounds like an overabundance of places and people but somehow she wrote it so I didn't get lost and remembered just what I needed to remember. The prologue and the first chapter are totally different settings that at first made me wonder why. As I continued to read I got to the "Oh!" parts where it made sense why she included so much detail about the those 2 parts.I was surprised when I just visited her website and found out this is the first of the series because I think that Mrs. Littlefield had already solved other cases. It seemed like I was picking up the story in the middle because she already lived so much of her life, but it didn't bother me at all. I'm looking forward to reading more of this series!Read more of my book reviews at http://jendisjournal.com
