What if your psychotherapist can't even help herself? Sabrina, a psychotherapist, has a convoluted relationship with her shallow boyfriend, Tom. The relationship has filled her with hate for all men and causes her to twist the advice to her clients while living her life vicariously through them. Her counselling sessions are ruthless and her advice nothing less than poisoned knives that lacerate each client's soul. In the turbulent post-communist capital of Albania, values have been contorted and the old ways lost. Decency lives side by side with manipulation and deceit; a fantasy life that blurs the distinction between glamour and reality, fiction and truth. In her difficult journey of self-discovery, Sabrina struggles to remain objective as a psychotherapist, often leading her clients dangerously astray.

I found the tales of physical and emotional abuse too continuous to love the book, but I do like the way it is written and the exposing of what can often be a hidden crime.Revisiting generational cycles of men abusing women, the tale threads together the lives of various people crossing the central square of modern Tirana in Albania. As the country emerges from dictatorship and Soviet-style economics and turns to a modern democracy, there is not enough to go around for everyone, so some people go to work in Italy. Other people prey upon the weak. And some people have modern jobs, like a psychotherapist who talks to the characters in this story. When the female psychotherapist, who pays the bills of her jobless boyfriend, wins a lottery, she dumps the guy and starts to think differently about her own insecurity and those of her clients. She hears the stories of a beaten prostitute, among others, and starts insisting that they take back from men what has been stolen - their freedom and right to their own lives. Her advice isn't always wise.A young gay man is bullied too so the book is not entirely about men treating women poorly, but we certainly do not see many good examples. I've read this kind of inherited cultural attitude in other East European works; perhaps it came with repression. Or else western countries have had longer in which to grow mature. The women's fiction/ psychological chiller is expertly translated and comes across as an excellent, though touching and tragic, portrait of life in Tirana. More the point, The Devil I Paid For Advice makes us aware of domestic abuse and determined to stop it.

By Ina Jongari "The devil I paid for advice"-the most unique book I have ever read. I could not stop reading it for a minute! I have so many things to say that I'm afraid my very simple words won't even get close to describe and tell you how much this book means to me. I'm sure saying "This book was amazing" won't be strong enough or big enough or anywhere close to what I feel for this novel. Congratulations, Jeta Vojkollari !
