This is the second edition of The Pink House at Appleton, a disturbing novel of adultery and betrayal. about a Jamaican childhood, a domineering father and a submissive mother on a Jamaican sugar estate. Set in 1950s Jamaica during British colonial rule, the novel covers a year in the life of a black middle-class Jamaican family at Appleton Sugar Estate. Against a background of subtle race and class prejudice and adultery, the novel describes the fate of the Brookes family when Harold Brookes, proud and ambitious, determined to establish himself and bring up his family with the right values, is unable to measure up to his own ideals. His clandestine relationship with Ann Mitchison, the white wife of the English assistant general manager of the estate, and the ramifications of a previous, secret liaison with a common woman, bring about the destruction of both families. The story is about the meeting of innocence and experience, seen mainly through the eyes of the sexually aware eight-year-old Boyd Brookes, who is smitten with seven-year-old Susan Mitchison. The two children nurture a secret relationship and see each other as romantic characters in a book. They finally meet after a slow, sensual build-up, but the relationship is cut short as their families disintegrate, and as a playful event brings about sudden tragedy...

The writing is so descriptive, of colors, smells, landscapes and emotions that it's impossible not to feel the passions - and fears - of young Boyd, the 8-year old protagonist of this novel. As the story develops the reader experiences the fear and apprehension that Boyd constantly lived with, as well as the joys and intense experiences of the young child's fantasy world he lived in.I found myself wondering all the time, how much is fiction and how much might have been true because so much feels real. The novel alternates between the beauty of the Jamaican setting and young Boyd's innocence, and the tension that gradually builds at a steady pace. Despite this dark undertow, and the presentiment that the story will end in tragedy, I couldn't wait to read more and to find out how it would all end.Although the mainstream story is that of young Boyd, there are many strands, characters and storylines, each told with their own contradiction of vitality and tragedy. I felt a great sympathy for Boyd's mother, a young woman striving to be a good wife and mother, sacrificing her own aspirations, and wished she could have been stronger and able to pursue her dreams. However, the balance of power just wasn't in her favor. The Pink House at Appleton is a mystifying blend of darkness and light, charming as well as disturbing. The author has captured the period so well in the details of clothing, music, politics and the social attitudes of the times. I've never lived on a sugar estate, and wasn't in Jamaica in the 1950's, yet reading this novel, I was transported there and experienced it all as if I myself had grown up there! This is a fine novel, with strong visual imagery - an absolute gem, and reading it I see it play out before me just like a film. It deserves to be made into a movie!

By Olivia Pratt Settle in with a nice hot cup of tea, glass of wine and some nibbles--The Pink House at Appleton is a captivating read about one year in the life of a middle class Black family in 1950s Jamaica. The writer's powerfully descriptive prose captures the core of each character and life on the sugar estate. Beautifully done using a mosaic of intriguing characters from the maids and gardener to the middle and upper classes, the writer skillfully and "wonder" fully brings us into (the main character) little Boyd's head, his innocence, his curiosity and his humanness as a little male child. One moment in the book that tugged at my heart ...so many of them...describes Boyd's escalating terror- he is in trouble and in imminent danger of being severely punished by his Papa, the ambitious, aggressive, scary Harold Brookes, "deep inside him sublime music played but his hands trembled because the music could not obscure overtones of distress. "I will be very interested in hearing what other readers think of Harold Brookes' outrageous treatment of the help. The writer does NOT shy away from how rife class prejudice in 1950s Jamaica was. I remember there was plenty of prejudice among the light and dark skinned blacks concerning their varying shades of skin colour, however, class prejudice ruled! I laughed out loud at the procession of maids interviewing for the position at the Brookes' house, in particular, when one accident prone prospect walked into the house and "the curtains between the dining room and the pantry deliberately reached out to detain her. " The rape scene was disturbing but masterfully painted by Mr. Braham.I loved the references to peeny wallies (fire flies), duppies (ghosts) and Rolling Calves (these only exist in Jamaica--ha, ha, haaaa!)Excellent story telling! Jonathan Braham is a master! I hope this gets picked up for a movie..it would be good...much along the lines of the movie "The Secret Life of Bees" one of my faves. I totally recommend The Pink House at Appleton! When's his next book out?

The novel draws you into a world populated with diverse characters whose social intercourse brings out the class prejudices rife in the society. It is a real place that is inviting, yet forbidding with its neat gardens, hills, houses and descriptions of secret yearnings borne out of curiosity and innocence while others stemming from dark desires. It is a thrill ride of emotions and feelings made poignant through masterful juxtaposition of incidents and allusions to nature and the ordinariness of every occurences. It is wide in scope and blends seamlessly, holding you under a spell, building up in anticipation to the very last page. Fabulously enjoyable!
