Quiet, Powerful By reality bites The surfaces of these stories concern events familiar to all of us: the death of a parent, the loss of love, aborted departures; the memory of words imagined but not spoken and of action considered but not taken. Often, the path not taken has more power to haunt us than the lives we actually live. Jen Grow's stories grow from considering that as a potent truth about human nature. They are beautifully observed, mordant, witty, calm. And they're wise without being angry, something I find refreshing. I highly recommend them. I read this book front to back and found each story more engrossing than the one before it. I mention this as I don't know what other readers' habits might be when reading a book of short stories.

And I loved it so much more than I would have guessed from the description on the back cover that talks about wives and mothers not living the fairy tale of happily ever after. Yeah there are stories of love gone bad, but if there's a fairy tale being debunked here, it's not Prince Charming, it's the whole American Dream. The title story is just stunning--how do we cope with our privilege?--explored with humor and pain. I keep rereading it. I know I'll also go back to "Still at War" in which the wife of a traumatized vet lives through her own post-homecoming nightmare and expresses for the reader what she cannot say. In other stories, Grow illuminates the fragile communities of the down-and-out. I'm being inarticulate here -- you'd do much better to just read this book.

Insightful and observant, Jen captures the despair and longing, the small joys and disappointments, and the heartache and hope that is life, in heartbreakingly beautiful prose. Each story strikes a chord --- you may not have lived that exact experience, but somewhere in each story you will say, “Ah yes. I’ve felt that.”These stories will leave you wanting more. I find myself reading and rereading them, each time discovering some new turn of phrase, some new unforgettable image. It so very easy to get lost inside the lives of these characters that Jen Grow makes so real. And that, to me, is the true sign of a great writer.
