How far will a father go for his child? How much will he sacrifice? Accused of murder, Caleb flees with his son Warren to begin a new life far from Earth. But when his ship crashes on an unknown world, Warren is injured, condemning the child to a slow death before his twentieth birthday. Telai is the first of her sword-wielding race to meet these strangers from the sky. Her loyalty to her people demands caution, yet she cannot ignore the plea in Caleb’s voice, or the desperate longing in Warren’s eyes. A connection takes hold, a bond even her clairvoyant powers cannot explain. Should she trust her instincts? Should she trust her heart? Caleb embraces the unhurried lifestyle of their noble cities, and swears an oath to protect Telai’s people. Determined to save his son, he discovers a passage in their archives about an ancient talisman that could cure any disease--but was so powerful it sent an entire race to the brink of destruction. Now he faces a terrible choice: Pursue this faint hope, betraying his oath and his growing love for Telai ... or watch his son wither away until he dies. Rite of Exile is the first book in The Silent Tempest trilogy.

Rite of Exile: The Silent Tempest, Book 1, by E. J. Godwin

About the Author E. J. Godwin doesn't write fiction. He creates worlds to discover.Even when he was a shy, 10-year-old boy he could never stay away too long from his one never-faltering passion, the stories and artwork of his imagination. Even today he still enjoys art as a secondary outlet for his creativity, but the written word has always provided the most freedom and flexibility. For that reason, fantasy and science fiction have always been his favorite genres. As the years passed he added more depth and texture to his inventions, until now, with the help of his editor, Erica Orloff, he has released his stories for readers to enjoy, and hopes to share more in the future. He lives in Michigan with an abysmally stupid yet endearing Persian cat, and enjoys bike riding, hiking ... just about anything that frees his imagination.

This book begins with an unplanned crash landing onto an unknown planet. Caleb and Warren had endured extended space travel and hibernation to escape serious problems on Earth. After landing, Caleb was found to be intact and able to thrive, but Warren wasn't so lucky, due to oxygen deprivation. Caleb was desperate to find a way to restore his son's health. The new world shared so many things with the Earth that Caleb had left behind. It was populated with humans and the same animals as back home. Landforms were similar. The people had a rich history and culture, lived in organized communities with leaders, had libraries and prophets. However, this beautiful new world was not tainted by any modern technologies. To be accepted into Adaian society, Caleb had to undergo extensive learning of their language, history, customs, prophecies and societal norms. Caleb's first instructor was the beautiful and single, Telai. After spending much time together, a mutual attraction grew and developed. Due to decisions made and long held superstitions and beliefs, Caleb was forced into exile. For Caleb and his travel companions, life became a true adventure, filled with danger and brutality. A very satisfying read! Many thanks to the author and his publicist for my review copy of this book.

I suppose my imagination only goes so far .. like serial killers and mass murderers.I cannot fathom living on another planet. That being said, I did find this book interesting. Interesting is such an inept word I hate to use it. I think maybe engaging would be a better definition. In this alternate reality, space travel is the norm. But as in our world today, accidents do happen. And space ships can crash into alien planets.Caleb and his son Warren become stranded on an alien planet. But what caught my eye and interest is that the alien planet is way behind Earth as far as technology is concerned. Caleb and Warren are able to show the native species many new things ... including weapons. The story holds many elements ... suspense, danger, and thrills along the way. It's like watching two worlds collide and holding your breath to see who or what survives. While not my chosen genre to read, I did find this particular book be well written and easy to follow and understand.I gave it 4 stars because it held my attention and that's not always easy to do.Many thanks to the author and the author's publicist for supplying the ebook in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.

Thank you, E.J. Godwin!I occasionally enjoy fantasy and science fiction, and Rite of Exile managed to hold my attention. It immerses the reader in a wonderfully crafted alien world that is very similar to Earth but at the same time, very different. Caleb and his son Warren arrive on a spaceship and have to learn the language, history, traditions and legends of the Adaian society which they encounter. This was my favorite part, all this exposition is fascinating. When everything seems honky dory, a misunderstanding (is it really just a misunderstanding?) causes them to flee to try to fight an evil that they are accused of causing. All the characters are interesting and well developed and the world building is impressive. I especially enjoyed the “quotes” that open each chapter, from the Adaian literary masterpieces. What I didn't like is that Caleb makes some huge, colossal mistakes out of mere stupidity. For such a fleshed-out character, how could I believe that he managed to survive crossing the universe when he can't manage to keep his most valuable ace hidden and safe. In any case, the plot kept me entertained and now I want to know what happens in the next book.
