I can get sucked down into characters lives pretty quickly so I really enjoyed June and the Deputy as the WASP “voices of reason.” Instead of being 100% sympathetic I’d find myself saying, “yeah what about that Oralee?” There is a scene where the deputy is talking to Oralee that makes the reader swap sides 5 or 6 times in the span of a few pages. That theme got me hooked and I didn’t put it down until it was done.Beyond the story, the commentary on Appalachia was incredible. It didn’t get preachy and it never vilified or exonerated any class or background. At the same time it stepped on my toes and was a great reminder that Newton’s first law applies to society as well. When you are raised with momentum, movement from one opportunity to another comes much easier. Skipper shines a light on the naivety of middle class charity and drives a truck through social welfare.Skippers writing always has this deep sense of place and character development. However, unlike some books of this nature, Oralee is not a portrait that can be hung on a wall and observed at a safe distance.

Morris This is the story about Oralee, an uneducated, honest, fiercely independent Appalachian woman who, despite hardscrabble poverty and adversity, refuses to accept government welfare (or assistance from anyone). She battles to survive and care for her infant daughter with little help from her lazy, beer-sodden husband Pedey. At first, they live with Pedey’s dad, Burk, who owns a convenience store and gas station. Then, wanting a place of their own, they move into a trailer. Pedey is injured and loses his job, and leaves town to find work in the city. Things turn from bad to worse in this inspiring tale of struggle, courage, love, and principle. Rich in metaphor, aphorism, and description, it may be Roger Skipper’s best. –Richard Morris, author of Canoedling in Cleveland

Skipper's Best Book Yet By Farmer frank Roger Alan Skipper has an understanding and fasinating command of Appalacia and the dialogue of his charactors. "Oralee", the title and the heroine prove Skipper can give us the female experience delivered in a hurry up and turn the page for an enjoyable race to the end. Please keep more coming.Farmer Frank
