If I am not mistaken, or totally blind that Hicks' well-crafted writing style reflects those of the literary gurus of all time such as Kafka, Kant and Camus. I realised later that he is also a big fan of Kafka. Living Companion, was like a re-visitation into that stylistic mode, which obviously has moulded Hicks' literary hand. That I could not take my eyes off the words, and sentence compositions. As I now delve deeper now into the plot, I find a tremendously refreshing story, unequivocally profound and unconventional. Similar atmosphere found in the literature of Kant, Camus, and of course Kafka, I sat down to read this book on a rainy day when clouds came darkly about in thick ponderous gatherings. What a perfect day to read this perfect book, dealing with a writer's mood, psyche, philosophy andpoetry? Waiting for Godot, as it were, the protagonist waits in futility for his muses to sing as he embarks on producing great literature. Whether or not he is able to reach fruition in the end, is a matter to be gauged through literary appreciation. However, Alexander surely takes us patiently through the brooding mind of the character to view an unbearable agony of a lonesome soul, lost in the pursuit of creative deliberation.

This is not your typical quick and unkempt psychological thriller. This is a visceral literary work that needs to be absorbed as you read. It is a book which peels back countless layers on a central character who is an obsessed workaholic - a character that the reader instantly sees in themselves in one aspect or another - interacting with his companion, an addition to the story which in my opinion made the book and added a realistic human element. I would venture that this book contains such a level of strife and pain on a core level that it could be certain the author himself has overcome challenges in his own life. I state this not in protest or criticism, but in an appreciation to make this work of fiction seem for the reader more of a story that each of us have experienced in one way or another. Well done!

It is extremely hard to find such great literature these days, possibly because works like this one go unnoticed. This is not an ordinary thriller whose only appeal lies in the art of developing suspense. This is a literary exploration of the human mind. The story mainly concerns a protagonist, who in spite of being obsessed with his work, is unable to produce what he hopes would be his best. He lives with a woman who is diametrically opposite to what he is. The novel unpacks its philosophy slowly but with considerable impact. The writing style reminded me of some of my favorite authors. It appeared to me as a mix of Dostoevsky and Camus. But that said, there is also a lot of originality about this work. It doesn’t merely tell a story. It also isn’t just pages filled with the writer’s own philosophy. This book makes you think. It raises many questions and tries to answer them. It traces psychological patterns. It’s written in such a way that the reader gets very involved with everything that’s happening in the fictional world. I was pretty intrigued by how the protagonist reacted to his surroundings. A book which doesn’t have a very complicated storyline or numerous characters, depend largely on the protagonist. Living Companion has a protagonist whose presence is powerful enough to make this book a huge success.I would recommend this book to people who admire literature at its best. I’m eager to read more of Alexander Hicks’s works.
