The great painter Henri Matisse was also a great book illustrator. By Slumming Angel Why publish an homage to Matisse's spectacular work in book production and include only a very few illustrations of that work?. The reproductions of Matisse's lettering, handwriting, drawings, linocuts, engravings for poets and writers he loved are in this volume the size of hors d'oeuvres. It is so frustrating. For example, Matisse's etching for the Calypso chapter of Joyce's Ulysses is reproduced in this volume as a 2"x4" image on a huge page filled with text of art history blather. Come on, Penn State Univ Press. The title of this book is Graphic Passion, and you've reduced it to academic anemia. That about sums up most of the text in this book, which is not for artists or art lovers or book devourers, but for scholars.
