Eye Candy for the Decorator or Designer By Pamela V Vintage Home by Judith Miller, is a beautiful hard cover book that is eye candy for any decorator or collector. 288 pages of breath-taking photographs are beautifully bound in this coffee table style volume. Chapters include sections on Art Deco period, Organic, Colorful, Space Age, Post Modern, Minimalist and more. I want one of everything that is pictured in this book!If you are looking for definitions because you are just starting to learn about furniture and design, this book is for you. If you are already well versed in design but are looking for inspiration in decorating or staging rooms, this book is for you. If you just love great designs and collectibles, this book is for you.Very well done. This book is one I will be looking at for a long time.

Super Book on Vintage Furniture, Design and Style By Emory Daniels “Vintage Home: Using 20th-century Design in the Contemporary Home” by Judy Miller is a beautiful hardbound book that will make a wonderful addition to the top of our coffee table where I am sure a lot of our guests, when they become bored with our conversations, will pick up Ms. Miller’s excellent book.Miller describes “Vintage Home” as a practical collector’s guide and a definitive style guide to living with the old and the new. But I think it really belongs to the Coffee Table genre. Miller does, however, give very helpful hints on how to pick up furniture and design accessories at yard sales, flea markets or thrift shops.The book first defines what vintage furniture is and discusses the Deco World, New Look, and New Moderns. The back of the book is loaded with a wealth of information including a directory of designers and furniture makers, suppliers and resources, a bibliography and very helpful index.The photos are beautiful as well as functional. For instance a well-written article on “Mixing -eras” in the beginning of the book is accompanied by photographs of what the mixed-era rooms would look like.A chapter on “The Scandinavian aesthetics” contains a wonderful illustrated section on Swedish glass plus am informative short biography on Poul Kjaerholm and his influence on design. Miller also wrote a very good chapter on wire furniture (but did not convince me).Born in Scotland Miller began collecting vintage furniture as a student4 at Edinburgh University in Scotland, has written many, many books on antiques/style and is a regular contributor to several newspapers and magazines. She co-presented “The House Detective” on BBC2 and did work for Discovery Channel as well. In addition she is a regular lecturer at the Victoria and Albert Museum and at the Smithsonian in DC.I will be picking up this book several times form my coffee table (cocktail tables for others) and am sure I will enjoy it each time.

By Kristi Gilleland This is a beautiful, full size coffee table book, loaded with full color, clear and detailed images of homes and collectibles. There's a lot of focus on influential pieces of more modern design periods, such as art deco, arts and crafts, Scandinavian, skyscraper, post-modernism, retro, space-age, ect. The book is divided into design periods, and has a few rooms of much older homes designed with the more modern-Vintage furnishings.From bubble chairs to marshmallow sofas, and art deco statues to Lalique and Murano glass vases, beautiful, characteristic desired objects are detailed, and that gave me a good feel for each period.I love the section on color at the end, I wish it had been longer. I feel like that would have made this book a bit more useful to me personally in my own decor efforts, but that's not really what this book excels at. It excels at training the eye to appreciate and recognize design elements that characterize the art and design movements of the 20th century. This is a book for antique dealers, designers of all types, art lovers, and collectible hunters.If there are pages without very detailed photographs, they are rare. This is a picture book. Each picture is carefully labeled and explained, and it is always easy to tell what the text is referring to.I found this very enjoyable to read and look through. It's eye candy, but presents useful and potentially lucrative knowledge too.
