I appreciated the complexity of the characters as well as the plot. The characters are real and so, too, are the issues they face. My only issue with the book is that it could have used better editing; there are spots near the beginning where the change in tense threw me off.

I have read all too many books where I hate everyone in the book! Inman's cast of characters have all the flaws we know exist in life, and yet we forgive them their faults. We have the noble and kind alongside the petty and dishonest -- just as we have in our lives. Inman is a beautiful and careful writer. This book is definitely a good read.

A Novel that Has it All By Mary Beth Thomas Year of the Snake: 1989; This novel has it all – a fast moving plot, well developed interesting characters, a sense of place, and thoughtful consideration of questions we confront in our own lives. The plot makes the book a page turner, so we race through it. But the well drawn characters are appealing and familiar, so we don’t want to let them go when the book ends and wish not only that we had read more slowly, but also that a sequel had already been written. The author makes the places where the story occurs - Goodwin SC, a smallish city in upstate South Carolina, and Little Rock Arkansas - seem real. The author demonstrates her sense of play in the pseudonym she chooses for the university in Goodwin: “Freestone University” – the model for which in real life lies in peach country only a few miles from the famous/infamous “Peachoid” in Gaffney, SC. The cities are well chosen. The social issues the congregation of Harmony Presbyterian Church in Goodwin comes to confront, abortion and gay rights, threaten to split the church in 1989. The author then reminds us of the scope of the upheaval that accompanied racial integration of schools in Little Rock in the late 1950s and reinforces in the reader the difficulty in and importance of keeping the lid on while controversial issues are considered and resolved. The key role of everyday citizens in restoring order in the face of upheaval is demonstrated in Little Rock by the band of mothers getting the public schools reopened after the governor closed them in defiance of the federal ruling to integrate; in the church in Goodwin, the band of church members standing together effect the necessary changes to ward off tearing the church asunder. The moral, ethical, and sociological issues with which the characters grapple are engaging because they are universal. They include, in addition to abortion and gay rights, responding to temptation; grappling with problems of interpersonal relationships; searching for ways to understand and communicate with loved ones or colleagues who suffer mental illness or a personality disorder; and dealing with the balance between allowing free expression of belief and squelching expression of ideas that can lead to destructive behavior. All seem more poignant in Year of the Snake: 1989 because they involve members of the clergy and occur in a church.
