Harper Roland has abandoned his job as a war correspondent, and returned home a weary, jaded 37-year-old. Uncertain of the future, he begins a search for enduring love--hoping to also regain his ability to see the beauty of the world.

The novel's sweeping tale encompasses four continents, and ultimately leads Harper back to the chaos he longed to escape. The result is a view of the contemporary world, in which place and history are mere starting points for the deeper journey into the geography of the human heart.

"...Calvin Baker...works in a rarefied strain of literature whose practitioners include Faulkner and Morrison, Calvino and Cormac McCarthy: allegorists whose stories are tinged by parable and psalm even as their sensibility remains keenly attuned to the avant garde. Grace is a tale of existential isolation juxtaposed against a sense of interpersonal connection that borders on the Brahmanic...a book so universal and timeless you could almost believe it had been unearthed from a medieval crypt, even as its critical but always compassionate observation of human folly positions it squarely within the increasingly fractious...postmodern world." --Dale Peck, author of Visions and Revisions and The Garden of Lost and Found

Review

"The plot moves along nicely and with strong direction as we follow Roland through relationships with various existentially driven women.... The story is engaging.... The meditation in Baker's novel is compelling, and it begs us to look closer, to inspire important conversations and richer dialogue, to make better connections with people and to hold those connections up for observation." --Bookslut

Praise for the work of Calvin Baker

"Global, personal, and finally transcendental, Grace involves us completely in its hero's extraordinary quest for meaning. Calvin Baker has written a wonderful and deeply affecting novel." --Joesph O'Neill, author of Netherland

"Calvin Baker works in a rarefied strain of literature whose practitioners include Faulkner and Morrison, Calvino and Cormack McCarthy: allegorists whose stories are tinged by parable and psalm even as their sensibility remains keenly attuned to the avant garde." --Dale Peck, author of Visions and Revisions and The Garden of Lost and Found

"In his long-waited and brilliant new novel, Grace, Calvin Baker offers us a soul-enlarging tale that blends exquisite language and profound insight in a way that only Baker could have written." --Jeffery Renard Allen, author of Song of the Shank

"Its veiled literary references--to J.M. Coetzee's 'Disgrace,' Homer's 'wine-dark sea' and Jonathan Swift's Lemuel Gulliver...hint strongly at the flavor and scale of Baker's ambition.... Grace...take[s] you places you wouldn't expect to go, by the most serendipitous path imaginable." --The Chicago Tribune

Open GRACE, and you know immediately you are in the presence of intelligent, thoughtful characters who dive deep into their souls to find the meaning of life and struggle to live by their convictions. After Harper gives up covering foreign wars, he comes home to find love and settle down. He travels between the States, Europe, South American and Africa, taking the reader on these exquisite journeys whose lush landscapes are beautifully written. Anyone who has ever been in love will recognize the feelings and emotions Harper experiences with the women he encounters. Baker has a gift for capturing how a breeze can unlock emotions and is quite capable of describing the action on a safari. HIs command of the English language will have you reading sentences over again to admire their beauty and envy their construct. This is book that's perfect reading in summer or winter. A true work of art.

By Steve Sieck This is a beautifully written, very profound exploration of love and an uncompromising quest for meaning. Really almost two books, it combines a very erudite tale of successive romances with page-turning dramatic action toward the end. Recommended especially to soul-searchers and those continuing to explore the mysteries of male-female relationships.
