"Alluring" -The New York Times Book Review A dazzling collection of stories about how the familiar can suddenly turn strange.A guidebook introduces foreign visitors to a recognizable but dreamlike America, where mirrors are haunted and the Statue of Liberty wears a bowler hat. A department-store supervisor must discipline employees who don't smile enough at customers, but finds himself unexpectedly drawn to the saddest of them all. A woman reluctantly agrees to buy her daughter a robot pet, then is horrified when her little girl chooses an enormous mechanical spider for a companion. The characters in these stories find that the world they thought they knew has shifted and changed, become bizarre and disorienting, and, occasionally, miraculous. Told with absurdist humor and sweet sadness, Viral is about being lost in places that are supposed to feel like home.

Review "The best stories here push toward real heartbreak." -Manuel Gonzales, The New York Times Book Review"Exceptionally readable...A rich collection that takes the familiar obsessions of love and loneliness and views them from uncanny angles in ways that are magical, cutting, and intensely recognizable." -Kirkus Reviews (Starred Review)"Sometimes offbeat, sometimes lightly searing, but mostly both." -Library Journal, Top Stories for Spring/Summer: 12 New Collections from Writers to Watch "Appealing intimacy and poignancy" -Publisher's Weekly"Magic lurks in the background of some of these stories, transforming the everyday into something that is just a little bit stranger. It would be hard not to enjoy this collection from Mitchell-just watch out for that robotic spider." -Elizabeth Rowe, Bookish Emily Mitchell's remarkable, innovative stories run the gamut of human experience - there are young lovers and old haters, there is laugh-out-loud funny stuff and melancholy reflection, straightforward plots and curvy free association. In short, this is a many-tentacled book of great variety, and it's exciting to see it unleashed upon the world. (Dan Chaon, author of Stay Awake and Await Your Reply) Binding together and moving through this delectable collection there's a mystery, the one that makes you keep turning the pages, its insistent heartbeat that of the beloved, the forever lost, the world you thought you knew, whatever is always waiting for you just around the bend. (Kathryn Davis, author of Duplex and Versailles)“The stories in Viral are so brilliant at unearthing the private pains and obsessions of their characters, after turning the final page one is left feeling as though they have been let in on a marvelous secret. Emily Mitchell is a masterful, magical writer, and Viral is an astounding collection.” (Laura van den Berg, author of The Isle of Youth)

By Amazon Customer This collection of short stories is reallly heavy on "relationships," and as such would probablybe of greater interest to the 25-35 year old audience, not to anybody younger or older.Nothing dramatic or surprising, or even overly insightful. None of the stories are bad, per se, just not of interest to me.

Light, playful, cerebral and remarkably imaginative, Mitchell has compiled a collection of short fiction that demonstrates a singular voice in storytelling. These aren't stories that anyone else would have written. Each of her pieces presents an innovative, high-concept premise, such as the woman who buys an artificial pet for her daughter, only to find herself living with a robotic spider with an overly intimate bond with her child. Or my favorite, "Guided Meditation," which starts off as a spoof of new age meditation recordings, and ends with a revelation on the true nature of spirituality.I read another review that mentions this book might appeal to younger readers because the stories heavily focus on relationships. Personally, I disagree (although I respect the reviewer's perspective). I suppose any story where characters interact would, by definition, examine relationships. But Mitchell's fresh voice and ideas cover broader ground. This collection runs the gamut between a fake tour guide of the United States to a confrontation between two co-workers on the corporate standards for smiling. Mitchell combines a keen sense of humor and a knack for emotional depth to create a collection that is a true pleasure to read. I highly recommend to anyone looking for something completely original.

Verner Emily Mitchell was my creative writing student in high school, and she came to me with a highly developed writing style and sense of story. Her novel, "The Last Summer of the World," was beautifully written, suspenseful and historically accurate. In this collection of stories she portrays the complexity and confusion of contemporary life in a way that is incisive, clear and non-judgmental. I look forward to many more collections and novels from this lady!
