Winter, 670 AD. King Colgú has invited the leading nobles and chieftains of his kingdom to a feast day. Fidelma and her companion Eadulf are finally home for an extended stay, and have promised their son, Alchú, that they'll be able to spend some time together after months of being on the road, investigating crimes. Fidelma and Eadulf are enjoying the feast when it is interrupted by the entrance of a religieux, who claims he has an important message for the King. He approaches the throne and shouts ‘Remember Liamuin!' and then stabs King Colgú. The assassin is slain, but does enough damage to take out Colgú's bodyguard, and to put the king himself on the verge of death.

As King Colgú lies in recovery, Fidelma, Eadulf, and bodyguard Gormán are tasked with discovering who is behind the assassination attempt, and who Liamuin is. They must journey into the territory of their arch-enemies, the Uí Fidgente, to uncover the secrets in the Abbey of Mungairit, and then venture into the threatening mountain territory ruled by a godless tyrant. Danger and violence are their constant companions until the final devastating revelation.

Atonement of Blood: A Mystery of Ancient Ireland (Mysteries of Ancient Ireland), by Peter Tremayne

From Booklist Fidelma of Cashel, princess, former religieuse, and advocate of the law courts, returns in her twenty-fourth mystery steeped in the religion, law, and culture of seventh-century Ireland. Determined to take a break from their crime-solving routine while enjoying some quality time with their young son, Fidelma and her husband-companion, Eadulf, are swept up into a mystery that hits uncomfortably close to home. After an assassination attempt is made on Fidelma’s brother, Colgu, king of Muman, during a celebratory feast, Fidelma and Cashel are compelled to venture into enemy territory to uncover a motive for murder rooted in politics, unrequited love, and misplaced revenge. As usual, Fidelma utilizes a combination of psychology, spirituality, and observation to break the case and expose a treasonous conspiracy. Tremayne and his impeccable cast of characters continue to provide the best of the best in medieval mysteries. --Margaret Flanagan

Fidelma the super-sleuth By Shirley Schwartz This is the 24th book in the Sister Fidelma series, and it is truly remarkable that this series stays as fresh and exciting as it still is. I highly recommend this series to anyone who is a fan of historical mysteries which reamain true to the period, and are well-written, well-charactered and well plotted. Mr. Tremayne is an historian of some note, and his knowledge of his era (Ancient Ireland in the First Century AD) is extensive. He is also a talented writer who creates wonderful, believable characters. His books are tightly-paced and exciting to read. This book is set in and around Sister Fidelma and her her husband Eadulf's home in Cashel. An assassin makes an attempt on Fidelma's brother's life, and while the king of Cashel lies trying to recover from his grievous wounds, Fidelma and Eadulf set out into the territory of their arch enemies, the Ui Fidgente to determine why this attempt was made. Although the Ui Fidgente is part of King Colgu's five kingdoms there is a lot of unrest and a lot of unhappy and mistrustful citizens. Not everyone in this territory is pleased with the alliance of the five kingdoms. Fidlema and Eadulf uncover a plot of sinister proprotions while they are investigating the attempted killing of her brother. As in all Fidelma books there is lots of danger, unrest, evil and violence, but Fidelma, in her inimitable fashion, purposely follows her enquiries until she gets to the truth. This remains one of my favourite historical mystery series.

All are seated when a man in the robes of a religeous arrives stating that he has an urgent message from his Abbott. Without warning he stabs the king and chief Brehon, while uttering a cry "Remember Liamuin" and then is killed himself by the King's bodyguard. The chief Brehon is dead and the king is seriously wounded. No-one knows the meaning of the words uttered by the killer as he stabs the king. Fidelma, Eadulf and the warrior Gorman set out to find what was behind the actions of the murderer. An extremely well written story, fast moving through the various twists and turns of the tale, until all is revealed. I found this book very hard to put down and very well worth reading. The description of the people and of the places visited so clear that I could easily imagine them.

Fast moving and action packed By Gallia Fidelma and Eadulf have returned to Cashel from their last adventure and are looking forward to spending time with their young son. Unfortunately, fate has something else in store for them. At a great feast, a messenger from an abbey is allowed to enter the great hall and upon nearing King Colgu, he whips out a knife and stabs him. The recently appointed Brehon in an attempt to protect the king from another blow is fatally stabbed. The guard kills the assassin but everyone is mystified by his words mentioning a name unfamiliar to all. While her brother fights for his life, Fidelma, Eadulf, the assistant brehon, and the tanist (crown prince) decide that the two must journey to the Abbey to try to unravel the mystery in hopes of determining the reason for the attempt on Colgu's life. Escorted by the faithful warrior Gorman, they depart for the Abbey in the northwestern part of Muman (actually near what is now Limerick). They find only more strange clues and coincidences and must travel further west deeper into the lands of the Ui Fidgente and the Luarca. They finally solve the mystery, discovering a plot led by embittered Ui Fidgente who still refuse to accept the Eoganacht as the rightful kings of Muman. The story moves at a fast pace with a great deal of excitement and danger. Fidelma is somehow mellower and the problems she and Eadulf were facing in more recent novels seem to have been resolved, probably because she is no longer a religious sister but is now concentrating full time on her role as advocate. At least she is no longer sniping at Eadulf and he seems more content as well. This was a highly enjoyable mystery and more realistic than the previous The Seventh Trumpet. However, with the continuing plots and conniving on the part of various princes, Colgu, who does survive this attempt on his life, needs to get out and about more in his kingdom or improve his intelligence service!
