This is a Long island story that takes place during a time of great transformation. At the turn of the 20th c. the New York coastline has changed. The odorous fish oil factories, once dotting LI shores in the 1890s, no longer produce the potent fertilizer that was spread on farmland from Manhasset to Montauk. The novel tells the story of how one small community deals with the changes while trying to maintain their native tradition of working "all-a-wanna' or all together. The place is the fictional Corycian (Core-seen) Island, known as the "Eye-land of the Gods." Here the Strand Hotel, the Believers' Campgrounds, St. Anthony's Convent, and the Captain's Guest House are new destinations for shoreless refugees seeking a connection beyond themselves to an ether sifting through the universe. When the world-weary newcomers meet the unworldly Islanders, a storm of spirit "be wit' in you and wit' out you, don't ya know," as native Nuna Shellfoot puts it. Her hope is in her ancestors, the Runapewak, a distant Algonquin tribe who wander Corycian in spirit. "All-a-wanna," they will help Nuna care for the sacred land of this place despite the likes of Josiah Remie and Hector Wesley. These two misfits are declared members of the northeast's Keyclose Clan. They are out to rid the Island of people like Nuna Shellfoot, her neighbor Ezra Goldsmith, and the nuns at St. Anthony's convent. Their plan is "to lead all sinners away and bring the truth of the Believers who will march through hell to save the promised land." Hansen Ratliss, the town's constable, and Burston Bakker, publisher of The Corycian Island Reader, aren't taking the foolish pranks of Remie and Wesley lightly. But they are also caught up in the changing times, the Great War, an influenza epidemic, and the Volstead Act. Then there is this newly-arrived, entitled generation of property owners to deal with. To those who seek her counsel, Nuna advises this is the place of the Runapewak, the true people, an "idea of the Gods" toward which all must work together. In that spirit, jsutice for all will prevail.

Don't Ya Know (Corycian Island Series Book 1), by Suzanne McLain Rosenwasser

Review Master storyteller, Suzanne McLain Rosenwasser, takes the reader on a magic carpet ride across eastern Long Island's fictional Corycian Island. From Calliope Point to Sirens' Beach, we meet freewheeling and engaging characters who share their quirky, and often amusing, insights into island life where the natives add spiritual complexity to an already adventurous and absorbing story. --Ted Alexander, author, The Fall of Summer

From the Author My father was a natural storyteller and the gift of Irish gab was never far away from my ears with the constant reminiscing of my mother's first generation family. My life was rich with stories and characters. The seeds of this story stirred decades ago when a dear friend always used the prhase "don't ya know" in place of the unutterable. She'd say: "I borrowed my brother's bike and hit my don't ya know on the cross bar. It hurt like crazy." Or:  "That's life, don't ya know!" I never was sure how to reply. Don't Ya Know is a story about what we think we know and what we do with it.  Corcycian (Core-seen) Island is a fictional isle off the coast of Long Island's east end that undergoes radical changes in the early 1900s. Land developers have bought the beaches beneath the fish oil factories. Now grand homes, harbors, and houses grace the shoreline. These are joined by a Christian camp, a Catholic convent, a grand hotel, and a spiritual colony. A clash of cultures leads the locals to redefine friendship, loyalty, and legacy. With its interesting mix of characters, Don't Ya Know, introduces a place known as the "Eye-land of the Gods" where a poweful ether sifts through the universe and the "tru-people" live "all-a-wanna," or all together, don't ya know.

About the Author Suzanne McLain Rosenwasser's essays have appeared in the New York Times, the Good Men Project, and the Huffington Post, among others. Her memoir, MANHASSET STORIES, is available in two volumes from online booksellers. Rosenwasser's fiction appears online at Ether Books and the Copperfield Review. DON'T YA KNOW evolved from a short story of the same title. Visit: suzannerosenwasser.com

By Mary Sheppard Our book club has read a number of historical fiction novels; some of which I've enjoyed, some not so much. "Don't Ya Know" by Suzanne Rosenwasser is, by far, my favorite. Set in early 20th century Long Island, the story introduced me to a time and place with which I was unfamiliar. The characters are richly drawn; some you will love, some you won't and some will have you laughing out loud. But even the "bad" characters get to you in some way. Ms. Rosenwasser has carefully written dialect for the native characters. That, and the vivid descriptions of settings allowed me to get deeply into the story. You know the feeling... you are so caught up in the story that when you stop reading, you have to clear your head for a moment and come back to the present. I love that feeling! As a southerner, I sometimes felt I was reading about the Gullah/Geechee cultures of South Carolina and Georgia, so it was fascinating to learn about the island culture of a northern state. Also new to me was the spiritual movement of that time. You will appreciate the considerable amount of research the author did for this book. I want to know more about this time, this place and these characters. Hoping for a sequel!

Anchored from 1900 - 1928, the author, Suzanne Rosenwasser, steers with a deft hand through Prohibition, World War I, Religion, Spirituality, turning textbook history into --- life. Her characters laugh, love, mourn, cry, and fear. And the island goes on.....Let a smile cross your lips as you head back home on the ferry, knowing you will return to Corycian Island; after all, these new friends are only a page away.

It is the story of the first 30 years of the of the 20th century of a fictional island off the coast of Long Island. The interrelations of the many characters, the interweaving of unusual events and the almost audible description of the terrifying hurricane are masterfully handled. Nuna, the descendent of the original islanders speaks in a dialect and conveys the spiritual dimension, beautifully nuanced, as she searches for the unifying force. I look forward to the promised sequel with more of Nuna's wisdom and the blossoming of her young granddaughter Ismy. I hope a simple map of the different communities will be included.
