About the Author Jonathan William Miller was born in Owenton, Kentucky, on July 7, 1968, and has lived most of his life in Central Kentucky. He is the youngest of three sons of a Baptist minister father and a schoolteacher mother. He attended public schools in Nicholasville and graduated from the University of Kentucky, majoring in journalism. After college, he worked at various newspapers as a reporter, sportswriter and website developer and producer in Texas, Arkansas and Kentucky. In the mid-1990s he began writing serious fiction.

The genre is not my thing, but the writer is talented By Dan Lawton Let me start by saying that I don't typically read short stories, nor do I truly understand the genre. With that said, I read this book in exchange for an honest review.I found some of the stories to capture my attention more than others, whilst others didn't click for me. I suppose the advantage of having a collection of multiple short stories is that you get to easily and quickly move on to something else if the story doesn't connect. That happened to me a few times. I can think of three stories specifically that kept my attention very well, and I did enjoy reading them. Although I do much prefer novels with big stories and complex morals, short stories don't quite offer the same experience. At least these didn't.In terms of the writing, though, Miller is good. His words are concise and fluid and it's clear that he's confident using the language. Despite my lack of enthusiasm for the genre in general, I am giving this a 4 star rating since his way with words is worthy of the rating. I do hope that Jonathan Miller considers writing a novel, as I would be interested to see what he can do with his voice in a concentrated work of that length.

By clahain A collection of short stories focused on individuals coming to grips with their inherent isolation--even from those they love.The stories here are filled with flawed characters led astray by their own illusions and failure to connect with the people around them. They generally fall into two categories. First, there are generally good people gobsmacked by an unkind, inflexible world. Second, there are those who do wrong though they know better and often want to be better. All of Miller's characters seem trapped by their own misconceptions and miscalculations. They either cannot attain intimacy or they cannot accept the restraints that intimacy imposes on them.Miller's writing is sharp and accomplished, and he has a good grasp on the emotional nuances that make for realistic characters. The world view presented in this volume is a bit grim, but that is literary short fiction for you, moody and leaning toward the pessimistic. Nevertheless, there are some lighter moments. "Mrs. Dumont and the Aroused Tenant" had me on the floor laughing. Also, "The Last Week of Summer" is full of a sharp-edged humor as a mini-war between two brothers clouds a much anticipated visit to their grandparents.A thoughtful, nicely balanced collection.

Roman If you were to get on a magic carpet and fly past peoples homes and peer into their windows to catch a glimpse of their lives, then you would probably be reading On Your Own by Jonathan Miller. Fourteen short stories that are a slice of different time periods of American life. Touching, heart-felt and honest, they are tales about irony, broken dreams, broken hearts. Colorful, insightful, and real, Miller draws sepia toned pictures of life through the eyes of a child going to school the first day, the raw fear of separation, the primal love of his mother. Teen angst, dealing with the unfairness of life, or even the barrenness of existence, disappointment, or even the longing for a child challenged with learning problems to just be normal in her parent's eyes. I loved this book, the honesty and attention to detail to the innocuous, those small insignificant moments in time that shape and define us, without us even realizing it. A profound book that is deceptively simple because of it's sparse and unpretentious way of grabbing life and bringing the small moments into the spotlight.
