5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Beautiful book By Margaret Olson This is a story of growing up - not coming of age, but of becoming a true adult. The protagonist, Ingrid Palamene, wanders from one fairly meaningless job to another and from one relationship to another. At the start of the book she returns home broke and heart broken. She finds herself helping her parents with the farm, and remains in her hometown to farm and to take responsibility for herself and her life.The story is set in Fresno. The sense of the landscape and the fruit are wonderfully evoked.

By Phoebe Fox Ingrid Palamede — called "Inky" by her family — hates returning to anywhere she’s ever lived: “Whole neighborhoods — whole cities — can be ruined by the reasons you left.” But, when yet another breakup leaves her with no place to go, Ingrid returns to the place she fled first and fastest and dreads most of all: home. Taylor’s lush, vibrant prose brings California’s central valley to life, both the tired, run-down, characterless monotone of Inky’s Fresno hometown and the rich, verdant beauty of the wine country.Give your obsessing brain a break from the endless loop of what went wrong in your relationship: Valley Fever is a departure from most breakup books in that Ingrid doesn’t seem to wallow too much in the aftermath of her broken love affair, instead slowly, reluctantly coming to life amid the fertile hills and valleys of her family’s vineyards as she helps her father through failing health and failing farming.Bonus: When you’re in the throes of breakup bingeing, Taylor bumps things up a notch from Häagen-Dazs and Cheetos with her vivid descriptions of home-cured prosciutto, warm and fragrant bruschetta from just-harvested tomatoes, almonds plucked and eaten straight off a branch, peaches “hot and jammy from the tree,” iced grapes piled into glasses of chilled vodka… and wine, of course — luscious, mouth-coating, mind-easing wine. Taylor’s pages offer a lyrical, beautiful and sensual place to get lost while you’re finding your feet again.

Each line contains word choices that help to capture rather subtle circumstances: a young woman returning to her relatively quiet hometown of Fresno after a break-up and trying not to envy her sister, who spends more time in places like L.A. and New York. There’s an accumulation of convincing little empirical details, such as: “Beside the guest room I could hear Anne in the kitchen, drying the Saint-Louis and setting them back in the cupboard. Anne doesn’t let anyone else wash her expensive glasses.”As in a Henry James horror story, though, you gradually realize that larger things are at stake, frightening outcomes possible, even if the casual observer would notice little physical action. The old family homestead is such solace—but is Dad dying? Old friends are a comfort—but are they liars? The family wine business is newly fascinating to our heroine—but is it an immersion in the real world at last or merely a cowardly retreat? And will it all end in financial ruin...
