Something Totally New and Different from One of the Superb Writers of Our Time, Rosanne Dingli By Boyd Lemon Rosanne Dingli usually writes mysteries, what I would call literary mysteries, because of the quality of the writing––far above the typical whodoneit. I am a fan of those mysteries. "How To Disappear" is totally different in plot line and writing style. If her name had not been on the cover, I could have never guessed she had written it. It is lyrical, beautrifully discriptive and poetic, like a prose poem, a novella, the perfect lenghth because any longer than 100 or so pages might have become tedious. Ms. Dingli has written a masterpiece––literary, poetic, interesting, thoughtful and exciting with a theme of people who disappear and a main character who reluctantly does so. Ms. Dingli shows us through her fascinating characters, especially Shelby, the main character, how we get in ruts of boredom and unhappiness, yet fight change, sometimes ultimately falling into change without intention. This is a serious work in a small package, brilliantly written that I highly recommend with one warning: it takes a while to get going. Don't just read the first few pages and give up. You need to read the first few pages, but it is not one of those stories that grabs you with immediate action and suspense on the first page. Stay with it, and you will reap great rewards.

This author excels at brilliant descriptions, so exact and precise and well observed. But it's the story which keeps you reading. I cared what happened to the characters they became real to me.As is usual with one of Rosanne Dingli's books information is conveyed effortlessly and integrated seamlessly into the story. It was interesting to read about Melbourne in another era and about Europe too. The rough working conditions contrast with artistic milieu which is portrayed enticingly.Australia is a nation of migrants-where many of us choose to disappear from our previous life and forge new identities. It seems to me that in disappearing each person eventually ‘found’ themselves.
