Mr. Judge's The Ocean of Theosophy is a classic of theosophical literature. Written in 1893 as a text to explain the broad themes treated in H.P. Blavatsky's two-volume magnum opus, The Secret Doctrine, it has long been regarded by students of the Wisdom Religion as one of the most valuable "keys" to understanding the latter work. Robert Crosbie described the import of this volume in the following manner: "As the Author’s Preface shows, the book was written in such a manner as to be understood by the ordinary reader; the simplicity of the terms used, however, should not mislead the reader into thinking that the work is an elementary one, for behind and within every statement there is a depth of meaning that the careless and superficial fail to perceive. It is really a simplified text-book of the fundamental teachings of Theosophy, and is found by students of the “Secret Doctrine” to be a true abridgment of that great work and a wonderful aid in its comprehension; it was written with that end in view by the only one competent to do so and is there fore earnestly recommended to every student of Theosophy." Students of every variety will gain enormous benefit from the study of both works conjointly. Mr. Judge's Ocean provides a high-level overview - the schematic, if you will - of the subject matter treated in great detail in the Secret Doctrine, and is so very useful in keeping in mind the scope of that work. As Mr. Crosbie further remarked: "The passage of years has served to show, not only the value of this little book, but the status of Mr. Judge as a Teacher. Everything he has written bears impress of his deep knowledge to every real student of Theosophy. Even the ordinary reader cannot fail to perceive that only “One Who Knows” could have so applied Theosophy to the circumstances and conditions of every-day human existence. About the Author William Q. Judge is the E.V. Williams Chair of Strategic Leadership and Professor of Strategic Management at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. Bill was a U.S. Fulbright scholar to MGIMO University in Moscow in 2001, formerly served as the Director of the EMBA Program at the University of Tennessee, and has served as a board member for a $300 million health system for nine years. During his career, he has earned five different teaching awards and helped to train over 50 strategic management doctoral students. Dr. Judge's primary expertise is in the area of strategic leadership and corporate governance. He has published a popular simulation on "change management" at Harvard Business Publishing, three books, and many top-tier journal articles. Bill currently serves as the Strategic Management Collection Editor for Business Expert Press, and was the former editor of Corporate Governance: An International Review, the premiere scholarly journal in corporate governance.

By OAKSHAMAN This is the best single volume text on the basics of classical Theosophy that I have found. Personally, I have read it cover-to-cover twice, plus it was the basis of an excellent correspondence course on Theosophy that I took through Theosophical University in Pasedena. Judge clearly explains all of the more fundamental principles of the perenial philosophy in clear language and well organised chapters. While he does use some of the Sanscrit terminology, he is very careful to render the definition into English as closely as possible. While this book was originally published nearly 110 years ago, I still considerate it the best primer for the serious student (those who go beyond mere pamplets and lectures.) I am dismayed that so many people seem to think that Theosophy, and the Society, is somehow obsolete and "quaint" in modern times. Look closely at anything of worth in your modern spiritual "revolution"- chances are you will find it all revealed in greater detail in either this volume, or certainly in, _Isis Unveiled_ and _The Secret Doctrine_....
12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. A good previous reading of theosophy By Aranval Main Theosophy 's book "The Secret Doctrine" by H.P. Blavatsky is very hard to understand without some previous readings on the subject. I think that "Ocean of Theosophy" is one of those books. It describes many Theosophy subjects such as cosmogenesis, anthropogenesis, reincarnation, death, karma in a more simpler way but it does not mean that it is easy. So this book should be read several time and each time you discover new things that you haven't thought of or even been conscious of. That's the magic of this book!
