In 1824 Major William Hawthorne, a 29-year-old British veteran of the Napoleonic wars, is appointed to the post of aide to an important but unnamed person at the Cape of Good Hope. He keeps a diary on which this account is based. When he reaches the Cape he is sworn to secrecy by the Governor, Lord Charles Somerset, and is told that his charge is Charles Norman, who is in fact the former Dauphin, Louis XVII, son of the executed King Louis XVI. Generally believed to have died during the French Revolution, he was smuggled out of France and cared for by émigrés in England, with the approval of the British Royal Family. When the monarchy was restored in France, Britain decided to support Louis XVIII instead of Louis XVII, who was considered too reactionary. In exchange for continued British protection and financial support he was required to adopt a commoner’s identity and move to one of the colonies. In 1814 he sailed for the Cape with his wife and young daughter. His wife died at sea and at Cape Town he bought a fruit farm where he lived as an angry and embittered widower. By 1824 the daughter Helene is seventeen and Norman has remarried. His new wife is Marie, in her mid-20s and the eldest daughter of a French-born neighbour, Etienne Taillefert, an intellectual who lost his parents in the Terror but who is liberal in outlook and an abolitionist. Taillefert does not know the identity of his son-in-law. Marie has given birth to a son, who is three at the time of the story. William dislikes Norman’s bad temper and autocratic style, but at the same time he is awed by the man’s real identity. He is impressed with Marie’s beauty and intelligence, but realises it is futile to admire his employer’s wife. Helene flirts with him behind her father’s back. After a few months the Governor sends for Norman and William and tells them that intelligence has been received that Louis XVIII is dying and that the aspirant King Charles X is aware that Louis XVII is alive – somewhere – and has dispatched teams of assassins to likely hiding-places to remove him as a potential claimant to the throne. William decides to take the Norman family away from Cape Town until the danger has passed. The plan which he devises leads to a surprising ending and changes William's life forever.

Gray The Chain of Time by Clive Algar is another excellent historical fiction about the early years of South Africa. This book will grab you and keep you glued to its pages from beginning to end.I really liked the storyline of The Chain of Time and how the author developed a tale which could have been taken straight out of history. The story is full of adventure and intrigue. With its fast paced plot you never get bored. In fact, just the opposite happens; you don't want to stop reading.Clive Algar has developed a cast of characters that are both believable and realistic. It is easy to identify with them and follow along with their individual stories. He did a great job of developing each of their backgrounds and stories.I really like reading The Chain of Time by Clive Algar and I highly recommend this book to all readers.[Please note: I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.]

Agar's "historical fiction" takes us back to periods that are unfamiliar to most readers, certainly those not from South Africa. This book gives an outstanding examination of a period when old regimes and beliefs (monarchies, slavery, women's roles, the importance of science in policy) were rapidly changing. He does this in a compelling, insightful way that gives personal perspectives. I highly recommend this outstanding contribution to southern African historical fiction and look forward to Algar's next book.
